Myth: Eating Late at Night Leads to Weight Gain
It’s commonly believed that eating late at night will lead to weight gain. People often avoid eating after a certain hour to prevent weight gain, thinking that the body stores food consumed at night as fat because of a slowed metabolism.
The timing of food intake does not directly impact weight gain. What matters most for weight management is the total number of calories consumed versus expended throughout the day. Metabolism does slow slightly during sleep, but this doesn’t mean food consumed late at night will automatically turn to fat. Weight gain occurs when you consume more calories than your body needs, regardless of when you eat them. Some research suggests that late-night eating might correlate with poor dietary choices, such as eating high-calorie, unhealthy snacks, which can contribute to weight gain. However, the key to healthy weight management is portion control, balanced nutrition, and regular physical activity—not the time of day when food is consumed.
