Myth: Drinking Coffee Dehydrates You
It’s often said that drinking coffee leads to dehydration because it contains caffeine, a known diuretic. This has led some people to limit their coffee consumption for fear of becoming dehydrated.
While caffeine does have a mild diuretic effect, the idea that coffee leads to dehydration is a myth. Studies have shown that the fluid you consume through coffee contributes to overall hydration. Although caffeine can cause increased urination, it does not outweigh the hydration benefits of drinking coffee. In fact, the water content in coffee itself helps hydrate the body. For most people, moderate coffee consumption does not lead to dehydration. However, excessive intake of caffeine or drinking coffee in place of water or other hydrating beverages can lead to mild dehydration. As long as coffee is consumed in moderation and as part of an overall balanced diet, it is not a significant cause of dehydration.
