Myth: Drinking Cold Water Can Make You Sick
A common belief is that drinking cold water, especially during or after meals, can cause digestive problems, a sore throat, or even lead to a cold. People often avoid cold drinks, fearing they will get sick.
Drinking cold water does not cause illness. The idea that cold beverages disrupt digestion or weaken the immune system is not supported by scientific evidence. In fact, your body maintains a stable internal temperature regardless of the temperature of the liquids consumed. Cold water may actually help hydrate the body more effectively after exercise because it helps cool the body down. Additionally, cold drinks do not affect the immune system or cause respiratory illnesses like colds, which are caused by viruses, not temperature changes. It’s important to listen to your body and drink water at whatever temperature feels most comfortable, as staying hydrated is far more important than worrying about the temperature of the water.
